Did you know that Jewish Classical composers Felix Mendelssohn and George Gershwin were also talented painters…?
In this three-part series, we will explore works by Classical composers who also paint. During each lecture, we will listen to music recordings and view images of their works. This setting provides the audience with both a visual and audio experience, thereby allowing a more complete understanding and insight into these composers’ artistic works.
The repertoire includes works by Jewish composers/ painters from across the world. It demonstrates how each of these artists expresses his culture, tradition and self-identity through music and painting. Lectures will include music and paintings by leading composers such as Avni (Israel), Gershwin (USA), Schönberg and Mendelssohn (Germany-Austria).
Dr. Nurit Jugend currently resides in California and teaches at the Continuing Studies Education Program at Stanford University. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Arturo Toscanini Foundation Competition, Klon prize, Liebersohn award, Acum award, 2003-04 Giles Whiting Fellowship from the Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University and 2007 Summer Composers Residency grant at Banff Centre (Canada). To date, Dr. Jugend has authored over a dozen published works, which have been performed worldwide. Jugend completed her doctorate at Stanford University, earned a Masters in Art at the Hochschüle der Künste and a Bachelor in Music and Art at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy for Music and Dance.
THURSDAY CLASSES
Love and Passion in the Biblical World
Taught by Jehon Grist, Ph.D.
3 Sessions: Thursdays, Oct. 28, Nov. 4, Nov. 11, 7:00 8:30 pm
$45 for non-members / $35 for members
To register, please visit www.lehrhaus.org.
Our course introduces students to all the facets of Biblical love, from the inspiring devotion of Ruth and Orpah, to the (not so) simple lust of Samson and Delilah, and the passionate poetry of the Song of Songs. We also take a close look at what Israel’s ancient neighbors were writing (and painting) in the same vein: inspiring (and sometimes racy) love lyrics, tomb scenes with ‘coded’ sexual expressions, and illustrated papyri that transcend the erotic. Throughout the course, we also search out the rights and roles of men and women in romantic relationships, from Mesopotamia to Israel to Egypt.
Please note: This course contains explicit Biblical texts and Near Eastern art.
Jehon Grist, Ph.D., is Executive Director of Lehrhaus Judaica. He earned his doctorate in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley, where he was a Regents’ Fellow. He has conducted field research in Israel, the Gaza Strip, and the Valley of the Queens in southern Egypt.

Food plays a big part in Jewish culture and holidays. What if you’re not Jewish but want to create a wonderful festive meal for your family and friends? What if you are Jewish and you want to make the holiday more joyous, meaningful and delicious? Then come cook and talk with us!
Food alone does not make a family meal or holiday celebration complete. Holiday recipes and rituals build memories and strengthen families. Together we will make latkes and a delicious Israeli vegetarian meal and discuss the ways to use food to build relationships and memories.
Dawn Kepler, founding director of Building Jewish Bridges, has worked in interfaith outreach since 1990. She has run workshops and classes in synagogues, JCC’s, Federations, & Jewish agencies.
Frieda Haidt is a URJ Schindler Fellow in Interfaith Outreach and a longtime member of Beth Am. She has taught numerous classes at Beth Am, including Mothers’ Circle, a program for non-Jewish women raising Jewish children.
