Holiday Study Saturday, September 4, 7:00 p.m., Social Hall Each year the Beth Am community enters the High Holy Day season on the night of Selichot (meaning “prayers for forgiveness”). This year we’ll be screening Everybody’s Fine, a touching drama that follows a widower (Academy Award winner Robert De Niro) who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his adult children, only to discover that their lives are far from picture-perfect. At the heart of Everybody’s Fine is the theme of family ties and the struggle for reconciliation. The film gently and insightfully explores the challenges involved in communicating honestly and negotiating the complicated relationships between parents and their grown children. “Everybody’s Fine arrives like a bolt out of some distantly remembered past, when they made movies about recognizable human beings engaged in real, if flawed, relationships, where the stakes are high even if the family van doesn’t turn into a giant robot” [Washington Post]. Following the film, Rabbi Marder will lead a discussion about how the film’s themes relate to the High Holy Days. Then we’ll join in a short Selichot service, featuring beautiful music and words of reflection on these Days of Awe. Yom Kippur Afternoon Study Sessions A series of congregant-facilitated workshops will take place on Yom Kippur afternoon at Flint Center. Topics range from the health care debate to talking to your children about God. The first session will be from 12:45-1:45 p.m. and the second from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Workshop locations will be posted at Flint Center during Yom Kippur. Wednesday, September 29, 5 - 6 p.m. Rabbi Marder will lead an hour of study before our Shabbat and Simchat Torah (Joy of Torah) service, which will conclude with schmoozing, noshing and dancing with the Torah.
