The National Food Bank of Israel
This month our tzedakah goes to Leket Israel. Leket serves as the National Food Bank of Israel, working to alleviate hunger among the nearly 25 percent of Israelis who live in poverty. Each year, with the help of 40,000 volunteers, Leket rescues food from corporate cafeterias, restaurants, and banquet halls that would otherwise go to waste. Volunteers glean millions of pounds of fresh produce from farms and orchards, and prepare more than a million sandwiches for needy schoolchildren. Leket buys nutritious groceries in bulk to save so that they and the other nonprofits for which they provide food can save thousands of shekels annually. Your generous contribution will help Leket Israel help those in need.
When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am Adonai your God.
-- Leviticus 23:22
