8th Graders Committed to a Better World
Our Social Justice Heroes for the month of February are our members Gabe Schacter-Brodie and Jeffrey Birdwell. Gabe and Jeffrey were the main catalysts in bringing the Home and Hope homeless partnership to Beth Am. Gabe and Jeffrey, both 13 and in the 8th grade, began partnering with Home and Hope as part of their Bar Mitzvah preparation. They volunteered at different congregations throughout the Peninsula engaging and assisting homeless families on their journeys to self-sufficiency as part of Home and Hope. They agreed that it would be a good partnership for Beth Am and through hard work they helped introduce a successful Home and Hope week at Beth Am. In his Bar Mitzvah sermon, Gabe cited the famous words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, "few are guilty but all are responsible." As young men in our community, both Gabe and Jeffrey epitomize a commitment to Jewish responsibility.
