For Families with Young Children

Young Families Shabbat Programs to Take a Hiatus

In an effort to assess and improve our Young Families program, we are going to take a brief hiatus from our Shabbat morning services and Mother Goose Storytelling beginning in March.   Our last Shabbat service will be on February 28 at 9:30 a.m.  In the meantime, we will be working on new and exciting ways to engage families with young children.  If you have any questions or feedback, please contact Rabbi Sarah at rabbi_wolf@betham.org or (650) 493-4661.

For Emigres

Torah Study in Russian
All Russian-speaking adults are welcome to drop in at any time

This year 20 émigré seniors finish their five-year exploration of the Torah by discussing D’varim (Deuteronomy) , and then they will begin the study cycle again. The tight-knit group meets twice a month for Torah Study in Russian sessions with Beth Am Jewish Studies teacher Masha Farber. For a people who were deprived of any religious education for 70 years in the former Soviet Union, the process was long and arduous. The group had to dig deep to discover the very ethics, morality and values of their own people.

“In Russia, we had to study the history of the Communist Party,” says Esfir Kunina, one of the students. “Here, in America, I was blessed to be able to start my Torah journey. It was very hard in the beginning, but eventually we started to realize that we have always longed to live according to the values and commandments taught by our people’s unique Book.”

“We have all started to see our lives and the world around us much more clearly through the prism of the Torah’s teachings,” says Kunina. “This class has enriched our lives with wonderful lasting friendships, debates and deep discussions during each session with our wonderful study leader, Masha Farber. On behalf of our group, as we continue our exciting journey through our history and theology, we would like to express our gratitude to our synagogue and the community, which helped us to renew our Jewish lives.”
