a clear leader in online activism and a dynamic force in the effort to
give all animals the happy, healthy lives they deserve. With the

in shelters or sanctuaries.

BOK Ranch provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons for individuals
with special needs. Lessons are held at The Horse Park at Woodside
(not at the office in Redwood City). Equestrian Therapy allows students
with physical, mental, emotional, and/or developmental disabilities to
develop physical strength, balance, control, self-confidence and self-esteem.
In one-hour weekly lessons, the student learns riding skills and responsibilities
for the rider and the horse. Volunteers may help groom and tack horses,
warm up students and perform general barn chores.

RFB&D promotes learning through listening by enabling those with
print disabilities to complete their education, advance their careers and
gain self-esteem. Materials are for all people who cannot effectively
read standard print because of a visual, perceptual or other physical disability.
RFB&D records educational and reference materials that are not available
on tape or disc from other sources, in areas such as history, math, science
and economics. Among many special collections of note in RFB&D's
library are those in science, medicine, environmental issues, law, women's
studies, Jewish studies, literature and fiction. Volunteers record

area adjacent to San Francisco Bay. Its 700 acres offers a sanctuary for
wildlife, migratory birds, home to threatened and endangered species, a

built by Henry Rengstorff in 1867, a 72 par championship golf course, a
50 acre salt water sailing lake, and a meadow area for picnics and play.

educational or garden docent.

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat
builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner
(partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at
no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners'
monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses.
Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment
and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours
of their own laborósweat equityóinto building their Habitat house and the
houses of others. Volunteers can construct and paint window boxes
to be used as housewarming gifts or as fund-raising items, help clear the
construction site of debris before or after construction, design a T-shirt
to be sold at a Habitat event, help fold or stuff newsletters or mailings,
design an affiliate Web page or newsletter, learn about another country
where Habitat builds, and coordinate a fund-raiser to help sponsor a home
there, register volunteers at the construction site information table,
paint doors and baseboards off site before they are put into the house.

The foundation honors Alexandra Chiles, who lived in Los Altos and
was 18 years old when she died in March 2000 following a six-year battle
with cancer and the complications of a bone-marrow transplant. The
foundation provides activities for young people who are hospital-bound.

children and teens.

LPCH is a hospital devoted to serving children, babies, teens and pregnant
women. Lucille Packard Childrenís Hospital also provides outreach
services including a mobile health van, participation in the SAFE KIDS
coalition, a health resource hotline for teenagers, a parent information
and referral center and a variety of health education classes. Volunteers
can organize a book drive to donate to the hospital, or do other outside
work to support programs and patients.

The House provides a home-away-from-home and compassionate support
for families with children with life-threatening illnesses receiving treatment

CSA provides vital social services to at-risk residents of Mountain
View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. Programs include Alpha Omega

will include learning about Tikkun Olam, a senior-related project and a
children-related project that the group will plan. Those interested
must apply; there are about 15 spaces available.
