May/June President's Column by Jay Hirsh: How Will You Participate In Creating a Vibrant Jewish Community?
Unlike my grandparents or even my parents, I’ve had choices about what synagogue to join, and even whether to affiliate at all. Over the years, my wife Sandy and I observed holidays at home and joined synagogues in Santa Monica and Tucson. When we joined Beth Am in 2001, my family was engaged in Judaism, but mostly for participating in activities designed for short-term personal enjoyment.

Know a Beth Am Member Who Would Enjoy Some Regular Friendly Contact from Co-Members?
Yad l'Yad is an established Beth Am group of lay-trained members who commit to regular contact with other members in support and friendship. We are concerned about the increased risk of isolation during this unprecedented time in our lives, and would like to offer our outreach. If you or someone you know would like to explore having a Yad l’Yad friendly visitor (primarily virtual visits at this time), contact us at

Supporting Our Sister Congregations in Ukraine: Congregation Beth Am of Poltava and Shirat Ha-Yam of Odessa
The Poltava Committee is expanding its support of emerging Progressive communities in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) to include Odessa in addition to Poltava. Rita Fruman, Director of Programs and Operations of the FSU for the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ), created a shidduch (a match) between Congregation Beth Am of Poltava and Shirat Ha-Yam of Odessa.

Tikvah Peer Support
This program offers one-to-one emotional support for our members who are facing a life challenge. Trained volunteers meet with members who are struggling with COVID-related challenges, job loss, bereavement, illness, divorce, a child in trouble or other difficult situations. The program matches congregants in need with a volunteer who is trained to provide compassionate support in times of crisis. All contacts are strictly confidential and may extend over several months. (The Tikvah Program is a lay support program and does not replace professional counseling.)

Join a Beth Am Virtual Sh'ma Group
Sh’ma Groups are small, intimate, regularly-scheduled gatherings of people who want to have fun, make new friends, learn and celebrate their Judaism. And now, you can join a group that will meet over Zoom!

May/June Clergy Column by Rabbi Jeremy S. Morrison: Confronting the Complexities of Our Relationship(s) to Israel as a People and Place
The infrastructure of Judaism consists of three pillars: God, Torah, and Israel. At Beth Am, we embrace and encourage the exploration of disparate and wide-ranging understandings of God and spirituality.

Outdoor Summer Services Are Back!
We're thrilled to welcome the congregation back to Beth Am for Kabbalat Shabbat services in our beautiful Outdoor Chapel beginning this July. As is the Beth Am tradition, the divrei Torah will be given by Beth Am members.

Help Beth Am Thrive

June Fund in Focus: Rabbi Akselrad Lecture Series Fund
The Rabbi Akselrad Lecture Series Fund honors our beloved rabbi’s memory by supporting inspiring lectures by leaders of social justice and human relations.

Does your employer have a matching gift program? You may be able to double or even triple your contributions to Beth Am! Many Bay Area companies will match charitable donations dollar-for-dollar, or even two dollars for every one you donate.

June Tzedakah Box: IsraAID COVID-19 Response in India
