Beth Am Women, Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan: Eishet Chayil -- A Woman of Valor: A Modern Look at Ancient Tradition
Come welcome in Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, sometimes called mar Cheshvan -- bitter Cheshvan -- for the month's lack of holidays, with a discussion of Eishet Chayil: A Woman of Valor, from Proverbs 31. These 22 verses, traditionally recited by Jewish men to their wives on Shabbat, is both beautiful and troubling for women today.
We'll take a look at this ancient acrostic and discover what scholars across the spectrum of Jewish thought have to say about this biblical portrayal of the ideal Jewish woman. Is it a lovely tribute to Jewish womanhood, a metaphor for Shabbat, a sexist, impossible standard set by men for their wives, or something in-between? How do ancient rabbis and modern feminists grapple with this text? Is there a way to interpret it in a modern context? Join the discussion and come to your own conclusion!
