Gesharim Presents “Repent One Day Before Your Death”

Exploring the Viddui Prayer with Rabbi Heath Watenmaker

Rabbi Eliezer taught: "Repent one day before your death." His students asked, "But do we know on which day we will die?"  --Mishna Avot 2:15

Given that we cannot, of course, foretell our death, how can mindfulness of it enrich our present days? Can the Viddui, our Jewish "confessional" prayer, offer us deeper intention and stronger bonds with our loved ones, even before we reach the end of life? We will look at traditional and contemporary versions of the Viddui, along with some of the rituals surrounding the deathbed confession, and will explore creative ways to let this ancient wisdom touch our lives today.

Gesharim is a congregant-led initiative to support individuals and families facing the end of life. For more information, visit the Gesharim webpage. Or, contact Rachael.
