Soufra Film Screening and Reception

In English with English Subtitles

“A stirring tale of empowerment!” –The New York Times

Soufra follows the unlikely and inspirational story of intrepid social entrepreneur Mariam Shaar – a generational refugee who has spent her entire life in the Burj El Barajneh refugee camp just south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam as she sets out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company, “Soufra,” and then expand it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee women who now share this camp as their home.

This screening, followed by a reception with tasty desserts and conversation, is part of Breaking Bread, a new worldwide initiative designed to bring conversations about community, entrepreneurship and refugees to diverse places of worship. Using stories of inspiring individuals around the world and shared meals, we gather together with the goal of building a culture of empathy and acceptance. Please sign up for the reception using the form below. Cost is $10 online and $15 at the door. Admission for students is free.

In English with English subtitles.

This program is presented by Beth Am Women with generous support from the Aptekar Family Endowment Fund for Film.
