Democracy Circle Discussion Series: The Anti-Abortion Movement and the Erosion of Our Democracy With Assemblymember Marc Berman
Saturday, April 8, 2023 • 17 Nisan 5783
7:30 PM - 9:00 PMZoomREGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED
How did the anti-abortion movement erode our democracy? Our first Democracy Circle discussion will focus on exploring the ways in which “voter suppression, gerrymandering and campaign finance loopholes have resulted in a decision at odds with the will of the people," according to the Brennan Center for Justice. A reading will be provided ahead of time to registrants. A guided discussion will be lead by Nancy Cavillones, Nancy Federman and other members of the Pursue Justice committee. We will be joined by Assemblymember Marc Berman* who represents the 23rd Assembly District.
At this first discussion, we will also come to a consensus on future meeting dates, according to the preferences of the group.
*Assemblymember Marc Berman represents the 23rd Assembly District. He chairs the Assembly Business and Professions Committee, which oversees health care professional licensing and regulation, occupational licensing and regulation, vocational education, and regulation of the legal cannabis industry. Until late 2021, Marc chaired the Assembly Elections Committee, where he was a leader on protecting voting rights, shielding voters from deceptive elections practices, making election information more accessible, and improving election cybersecurity and campaign finance disclosure. Most recently, he championed legislation that requires elections officials to mail voters a ballot before every election. He also chairs the Select Committee on the Master Plan for Higher Education in California. We have asked Assemblymember Berman to talk about what is happening now with legislation to strengthen reproductive rights and protect abortion access in California, including safeguarding medication abortion, securing a person’s digital queries and safeguarding the privacy of data in period-tracking apps.
