June Tzedakah Box Supports Downtown Streets Team

Serving as a stepping stone to employer individuals to find employment, housing and a better life.

Our June Tzedakah Box will support the Downtown Streets Team (DST), an innovative, local nonprofit that provides homeless and low-income men and women with the resources they need to rebuild their lives. Downtown Streets Team brings businesses, communities and homeless people together to create and maintain a clean, safe downtown district. In the program, people who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, have the opportunity to improve their lives in meaningful and lasting ways: they participate in volunteer beautification projects such as removing trash and debris from our city streets, in exchange for food vouchers, shelter, case management and other resources they need to move forward into permanent housing, employment and lives of dignity.

The program began in Palo Alto in 2005 with four homeless team members. Today, it has hundreds of active participants throughout the Bay Area. The model is structured to be a one-year transitional program and has had remarkable success, helping more than 1800 clients find permanent housing and jobs. In 2009, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government recognized the Downtown Streets Team as one of the top 50 innovative programs in the country. Learn more about Downtown Streets Team.
