June Tzedakah Box Supports Tevel B'tzedek
Our June Tzedakah Box donations will support Tevel B'tzedek, an Israeli NGO focused on addressing extreme poverty in the developing world while building a cadre of young people deeply connected to their Jewishness and dedicated to global social justice. The organization is based on the idea that it is spiritually and ethically unacceptable that millions of people in our world don’t have sufficient nutrition, clean water, housing, basic health or education. This reality can and must be changed. Tevel B’tzedek mobilizes volunteers from Israel and Jewish communities worldwide to help impoverished people in developing countries, using a long-term, integrated intervention method that addresses issues such as education, agriculture, public health and women’s empowerment.
Tevel B’tzedek was born when Rabbi Micha Odenheimer traveled to Nepal in 2005. There he was struck by the large number of Israeli tourists who were visiting the impoverished nation. Talented and motivated, many expressed a desire to do something to help the country. When Micha returned to Israel, he recruited 15 young Israelis who moved to Kathmandu in 2007, living in a group house and volunteering with local NGOs. With that first group, a movement was born. In the past 10 years, over 1200 young Israelis and Jews have come to Nepal and 12 other countries to give and to learn, and have returned to their home communities with a different view of the world and their place in it.
The organization is led by Carmela Aigen, the widow of a greatly respected rabbi, Ron Aigen. Your generous donations will help Tevel B’tzedek create a cadre of Israeli and Jewish leaders passionately engaged in tikkun olam – fixing the world, locally and globally. Learn more about Tevel B'tzedek.
