October Tzedakah Box Supports Immigration Legal Team of Jewish Family Service of San Diego

Our October Tzedakah Box donations will support the Immigration Legal Team of Jewish Family Service of San Diego, which provides free or low-cost legal services to asylum-seeking families who are searching for a better life in the United States.

The administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols, or MPP, known more widely as “Remain in Mexico,” returns certain asylum seekers to Mexico to await immigration court cases in the U.S. Since it began in January, at least 9,854 people have been sent back across the California border, according to the Mexican government. Most do not have attorneys to represent them in court. Unlike in criminal court, the government is not required to provide attorneys to immigrants facing potential deportation. Studies have shown that those with attorneys are significantly more likely to win their cases. JFS of San Diego runs a legal services hotline for asylum seekers, and their attorneys are able to represent some of them in court. But the organization is seeking to raise $115,000 to hire a full-time attorney to represent asylum-seekers forced to remain in Mexico.

Your generous donations can help connect vulnerable families to critical legal services so they can continue their asylum journey in safety and with dignity. Learn more online.
