Legacy Giving

What will your legacy be?

When you give thought to your estate plans, naturally you will prioritize caring for your family and other loved ones first and foremost. Frequently the second step is considering the other ways you want your values to carry on, such as through the charitable organizations that have been meaningful in your life and who do work that is important to you. Legacy gifts come in all sizes and multiple forms, including wills, retirement funds, real estate, or through your Donor Advised Fund.

If you hope to make a charitable legacy gift, utilizing your retirement fund by naming Beth Am as a beneficiary can be the best way to do it. Here’s why:

  1. Easy to set up: An attorney is not required. Simply access your retirement fund beneficiary form (by calling your account custodian or by logging into your account portal) to allocate a small percentage gift to Beth Am and your other favorite charities. If applicable and required, be sure to get signed spousal approval of the change; otherwise the charitable plans may be nullified. Congregation Beth Am’s Federal Tax ID# is 94-1450202.
  2. Easy to change: If you change your mind, it’s just as easy to make a modification at any time.
  3. Funds in retirement accounts may be subject to taxation twice (under applicable estate taxes and income taxes when your heirs make withdrawals). This makes a retirement fund allocation the best vehicle for a charitable legacy gift, as the dollars going to Beth Am will not be taxed — allowing you to leave other less taxed assets to your heirs.

Even modest legacy gifts to Beth Am make a difference — not just the ones with multiple commas! That’s because once we receive your legacy gift, we typically direct it to our Fund for the Future endowment as a long-term investment. Over time, it grows and generates permanent income for Beth Am.
