Hebrew Curriculum for 3rd Grade, 2018-2019: The Curriculum Re-Imagined

The Education Team at Congregation Beth Am is excited to share with you some upcoming changes to our Hebrew Program. In keeping with the latest educational research and the best practices of congregations around the country, we will be “turning Hebrew on its head.”

Our program will be focused on helping students learn Hebrew in the most effective and enjoyable way possible. This revamped curriculum builds on the most effective pieces of our current curriculum. Rather than spending four years on decoding (sounding out Hebrew letters and words), our Hebrew Program will begin by offering students a wealth of opportunities to absorb the sounds of Hebrew in fun, active and engaging ways -- through songs, games, movement, hands-on projects, worship services and significant Hebrew words and phrases that will be incorporated into class activities. Students will also acquire a “Jewish life vocabulary” and build their understanding of Jewish values while learning Hebrew words and concepts along the way.

Once our students have developed a strong Hebrew foundation through aural learning, they will move into decoding Hebrew in their 5th or 6th grade year. At this stage, we will use an excellent, technology-rich interactive online learning program, reinforced by hands-on activities, that will allow each student to become proficient in reading Hebrew at his or her own pace. This program, called “Learn Hebrew Side-By Side,” has been successfully employed in congregations around the country, and has allowed students to be fully prepared, in a much shorter time, to read Torah and lead Shabbat morning prayers at their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

Our goal in launching this new curriculum is to help students not only learn Hebrew, but also to love Hebrew -- and the Jewish tradition to which this beautiful language is inextricably linked. The new Hebrew curriculum will be rolled out over the next several years, beginning with students who will enter 3rd grade in the 2018-2019 school year.

The revamped Hebrew curriculum was designed based on recommendations made by the B’nei Mitzvah Revolution Task Force, which included Beth Am parents, teachers, students and educators.
