President's Column by President Andy Cheng: President's Remarks from the 65th Annual Congregational Meeting
Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the URJ, offered some perspective on the current crisis. He said, “While there’s no definitive guidebook for the challenges we’re facing, our sacred community have always leaned on the Torah for guidance and stood on the shoulders of our leaders.”

Social Justice

May Tzedakah Box and Fund in Focus:
Beth Am's Social Action Emergency Fund

Our Tzedakah Box and Fund in Focus collections during this time of pandemic are devoted to Beth Am's Social Action Emergency Relief Fund. This fund, established to provide crucial assistance during times of natural disaster, helps members of our congregation who are experiencing financial distress due to the impact of COVID-19.

Face Coverings for All

Let's work together to make sure every Beth Am congregant has a face covering. When we achieve this goal, we will donate additional face coverings to those in our community who need them most. A Beth Am congregant who teaches sewing has offered to teach you via Zoom. She has one sewing machine to give away if you are willing to make face coverings for our congregants. Email facecoverings@betham.org for more information.

Beth Am Hunger & Homelessness Fund

Each spring Beth Am distributes money from our Hunger and Homelessness Fund to organizations on the frontline fighting hunger and homelessness in our community.  Beth Am serves as a beacon with all of the love and care expressed by so many in our community.

Honorable Mentschen: Beth Am members who are making a difference in the community.

We want to highlight the many people in our congregation who are stepping up to add extra humanity in our community and our world — in so many different ways. Read about them, then nominate a new one!

Clergy Column by Rabbi Janet Marder
The Uses of Adversity

The Bible, I think, is such a jewel: a work produced over many hundreds of years by a people schooled in suffering, setting forth their hard-earned lessons of wisdom and resilience. If we internalize its teachings, it can serve as a jewel in our heads, a prism through which to view our current troubles that can lend us ancestral strength.

Shavuot 2020

In ancient times, Shavuot was a pilgrimage festival during which Israelites brought crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of the giving of the Torah, education and actively choosing to participate in Jewish life.

Youth Education

2020-2021 Youth Education Registration
Given the uncertainty of our world at present and thinking about this coming fall, we have made the decision to push Youth Education registration to June. This will give our educators time to plan for possible scenarios of continued shelter-in-place or social distancing in conjunction with a normal in-person schedule. We are working on some exciting innovations for many of our programs and will look forward to sharing them with you soon!
