Tisha B'Av -- The Lesson Plan: The Story of the Third Wave Film with Discussion Led by Rabbi Marder and Reading of Lamentations
Tisha B’Av (the Ninth of Av) is a day of mourning on which we remember the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem, pondering the lessons we can learn from our history. This year, we will mark the day with a screening and discussion of The Lesson Plan: The Story of the Third Wave. The Third Wave (also known as The Wave) was the now infamous 1967 classroom experiment in fascism conducted by Ron Jones, a history teacher at Cubberley High School in Palo Alto. Within a few days, the experiment went out of control; the Third Wave students unwittingly re-enacted the roots of the Third Reich.
In this 2011 documentary, the original students and teacher reflect on their experiences and the lessons they learned from the Third Wave experiment. Today the Wave story is a powerful tool for educating students about the elements of extremism and helping them draw timely lessons for today.
Following the screening and discussion, we’ll join in a short and meaningful candlelit Tisha B’Av service, including the chanting of selections from Eicha, the biblical book of Lamentations, music and reflective readings.
