Pirke Avot: Learning from Our Fathers/Ancestors

Pirke Avot, "Ethics/Wisdom of the Fathers" is a collection of rabbinic sayings compiled sometime between 250-275 CE, though the sages cited in the texts lived much earlier. According to tradition, Moses received the Torah at Sinai, and transmitted it to Joshua, who passed it to the Elders, and the Elders to the Prophets, and the Prophets to the Sages. Over the centuries it has become the principal ethical scripture for the Jewish people. In the spirit of Father's Day, which falls during this month, we will take a closer look at some of the wisdom in this collection, and discuss how our own fathers/grandfathers/ancestors guided our ethical instruction, what we learned (or didn't learn) from them, and what nuggets of wisdom we will pass down to future generations, to our children and/or our students.
