Climate change is a hot topic, and not just because the planet is warming! We see the disastrous impact of excess greenhouse gases from the extremes of wildfires, hurricanes, droughts, floods, heat waves and habitat loss in the USA and around the world. It can seem overwhelming, and many of us may feel helpless. But our Jewish tradition asks us to take action, individually and together as a community, to ensure a sustainable planet. What can we do now to make a difference?

Our first session focuses on legislative and policy strategies to reduce greenhouse gases. This session is open to the entire community, including Beth Am members and anyone else who is interested in addressing climate change through legal and policy solutions. This is a rare opportunity to have direct dialogue with prominent influencers of laws and policies that directly affect climate change behavior.

Beth Am member and State Senator Josh Becker will provide an overview of legislative and policy initiatives in California to combat climate change, including the two bills that he sponsored this year which have passed.

We will explore two different and complementary approaches for your involvement:

  • Leaders of the Legal Pathways to Deep Decarbonization project (LPDD) will share their progress in creating model and actual federal, state and local laws that legislatures can customize and adopt in order to achieve deep reductions in fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, and the opportunity for legal professionals and others to volunteer to help draft and promote model laws to promote decarbonization.
  • Volunteer leaders from Citizens’ Climate Lobby will share why their grassroots efforts to “put a price on carbon” is the single most powerful tool available to reduce America’s carbon solution. We will discuss several opportunities for anyone to help build the political will for Congress to pass pending legislation to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Whether you have legal training or not, there is an opportunity for everyone to make a meaningful contribution towards shaping legislation for a healthier climate.

Click through to register for Session 2 on October 24, focusing on individual actions, community advocacy, and organizing sustained Beth Am efforts to fight climate change.
