Friday, September 8, 2023 • 22 Elul 5783
6:15 PM - 7:30 PMSanctuary* and betham.org/streaming; Oneg Shabbat to Follow in the Social HallDuring our Erev Shabbat service, come hear a thought-provoking discussion about the situation in Israel with the President and Founder of J Street, Jeremy Ben-Ami. Jeremy will discuss the growing Israeli protest movement, what it means to be pro-Israel in today’s world, and what American Jews and the U.S. government can do to advance democracy, equality and justice both in Israel and here in the United States. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
The service will be followed by an Oneg Shabbat in the Social Hall during which we will be joined by guest speaker Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who will address attendees with a message of solidarity and support. Come enjoy delicious treats and wine, sponsored by the Bauman, DeFilippo, Kronick, Lazarus, Rolfe and Rothschild families.
Jeremy Ben-Ami has both deep experience in American politics and government and a passionate commitment to the state of Israel. His family connection to Israel goes back 130 years to the first aliyah when his great-grandparents were among the first settlers in Petah Tikva. His father was an activist and leader in the Irgun, working for Israel’s independence and on the rescue of European Jews before and during World War II.
Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, representing California’s 16th district, is known to champion a progressive foreign policy and has been a vocal ally for J Street on the Hill. She recently led a Congressional letter with Rep. Raskin, signed by 48 Members of Congress, commending Israeli protesters and opposing Netanyahu’s plans to “eviscerate the independence of the Israeli judiciary.”
*This service will be live video streamed. By entering the Sanctuary you give Beth Am permission to record you.
