Jewish Film Series Presents: "Goodbye, Columbus"

Saturday, June 4, 2022 5 Sivan 5782

3:30 PM - 5:30 PMZoom

Watch the 1969 film Goodbye, Columbus on your own (Amazon Prime, Apple TV), then join via Zoom for a virtual discussion with Stanford Jewish Studies Professor Dr. Steven J. Zipperstein, who is now preparing a biography of Philip Roth for Yale's "Jewish Lives" series.

Based on Philip Roth's 1959 novella, in Goodbye, Columbus, working class Bronx librarian Neil Klugman meets Radcliffe student Brenda Potemkin at her Westchester country club and they dive into an affair. Roth offers an often unflattering portrait of upwardly mobile Jewish Americans. Was this portrait ever accurate... and if so, what has and has not changed?

Dr. Zipperstein will be in conversation with Beth Am member Lauren John, followed by Q&A.
