JCRC Presents: Connecting Antisemitism and Democracy: An Evening With Amy Spitalnick
Thursday, September 12, 2024 • 9 Elul 5784
7:00 PM - 9:00 PMBeit KehillahLast month, JCRC Bay Area assembled a Post-Election Taskforce to study the impact of the November election on the Jewish community, which will make recommendations on how JCRC and our community should act, given various scenarios. A critical piece of this work is understanding how the health and safety of the Jewish community is deeply tied to the security of our nation’s democracy. To help us all understand this link and support our community’s work, JCRC Bay Area is excited to host a conversation with Amy Spitalick, CEO of JCPA (Jewish Council of Public Affairs), to explore the connection between antisemitism and our democracy.
Amy recently authored the Antisemitism X Democracy Report, which illustrates the connectedness between antisemitism, other forms of bigotry and anti-democratic extremism. She argues that antisemitism cannot be addressed in a silo. Instead she says we “must advance inclusive multiracial democracy in service of Jewish safety, and we must combat antisemitism in service of inclusive multiracial democracy.”
Amy has a background in taking on extremists and holding them accountable for their violence. As Executive Director of Integrity First for America, she led the groundbreaking lawsuit against the neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and hate groups responsible for the Charlottesville violence.
In her current role as CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, she works across communities to build a just and inclusive American democracy.
