2:30 PM - 5:30 PMBeit KehillahFilm screening, 2 hours, 15 minutes; Italian with English subtitles; Followed by discussion
PLEASE NOTE: This film begins at 2:30 PM!
This Italian-language, historical drama tells the story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy living in Bologna, Italy in the mid-1800s. After being secretly baptized, Edgardo was forcibly taken from his family by the Papal States to be raised as a Catholic. His parents’ heart-breaking struggle to free their son became part of an international political battle that pitted the papacy against forces of Italian unification and democracy in both Europe and America.
Loosely based on Danielle Scalise’s book Il Caso Mortara, the film features excellent production values and an edge-of-your-seat viewing experience. Note the earlier starting time of 2:30 PM, due to the length of the film.
