This Month's Topic: When Stanford Had a Jewish Quota

For the first time, documented evidence has emerged regarding a period in which Stanford University (like some other prominent educational institutions) had a quota for the number of Jewish students to be admitted. In this session, we will examine recently published original correspondence in which the quota was discussed and consider its relevance for our community today, at the time of year when forgiveness is a major theme in Jewish life. Is it possible to forgive an institution? What expectations do we have for reassessment of the former leaders involved? How similar or different is this issue from other instances involving redress of past wrongs? How should we confront painful history that impacted previous generations of Jewish families, in light of other current social justice concerns? All are invited to join as we explore how revelations about the past can raise significant questions for the present.

Join in this lunchtime series that explores topics at the intersection of philosophy, Jewish thought and contemporary issues. This is an interactive lunchtime discussion. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Shelley Hebert.

Reminder: In keeping with Beth Am's security policy, please be sure that your on-screen Zoom identity shows your first and last names, not just your initials or device name, so that you will be admitted when signing in.
