During the turbulent '60s Civil Rights era, Jews were active and vocal in their support of Dr. King's stand for racial equality and harmony. Sadly, that relationship has frayed in recent years and may be forgotten or ignored by many. This powerful 2020 film highlights pivotal moments in our shared Black-Jewish history through a trove of archival materials and narration by eyewitnesses and activists, among them Congressman John Lewis, Rabbi Alvin Sugarman and Ambassador Andrew Young as well as members of the King family.
Today, with divisive seeds of hate taking root in the American landscape, a new generation affirms its pledge to actively promote the values of social justice. Shared Legacies validates the ubiquity of the human experience. It is an important and inspiring film.
