Tashlich: Casting Away Our Sins
Tuesday, September 23, 2025 • 1 Tishrei 5786
4:00 PM - 4:45 PMPalo Alto Baylands Sailing Station*The prophet Micah said, “God will take us back in love and will cover up our wrongs; God will cast into the depths of the sea all of our sins” (7:19).
As partners with God in the process of teshuvah (repentance and return), it is customary to gather on Rosh Hashanah afternoon to perform Tashlich (“casting off”), the ritual of tossing bread crumbs into a flowing body of water to symbolically cast away our sins. We’ll meet at the Palo Alto Baylands Sailing Station for a brief service and time for reflection. You may want to bring an umbrella to provide shade. In order to protect wildlife, the park rangers have requested that we use only very fine bread crumbs, which will be provided.
If you choose to do Tashlich service on your own, here's a printable Beth Am Tashlich guide (pdf) to lead you through the ceremony.
