February Tzedakah Box: Benefitting Teen Van

Our February Tzedakah Box supports the Teen Van, a mobile medical clinic that provides free health care to needy and homeless teenagers in our area, making medical care accessible to young people who often lack health insurance and transportation.
For more than 20 years, this doctor’s office on wheels has provided free care and medications to those between ten and 25. A community project of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and Children’s Health Fund, the van visits continuation high schools, community centers and other places frequented by at-risk adolescents in Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco Counties, offering medical, nutrition and mental health services, immunizations, reproductive health care, and treatment for chronic illnesses, substance abuse and depression.
A social worker is available for counseling and connects adolescents to additional resources; a registered dietitian works with patients who are malnourished, a frequent health issue for this population. So far, the van has treated more than 4,500 patients, 40% are either homeless or formerly homeless.
