High Holy Day Mitzvot

Here are 5 ways to do a mitzvah and make a difference this High Holy Day Season:

Mitzvah #1: October Tzedakah Box

This month our Tzedakah Box proceeds will support Jewish Family and Children's Services (JFCS). As the problem-solving center for residents of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, JFCS is a lifeline for children, families and older adults facing personal crises or challenges. They have over 40 programs, including home care for seniors, therapy for children, youth volunteer programs, services for people with disabilities and much more. Visit www.jfcs.org for more information. DONATE

Mitzvah #2: High Holy Day Food Drive

The High Holy Days are a time for personal reflection; they are also a time for us to share with those who are less fortunate. Every year BATY (Beth Am Temple Youth) sponsor an annual High Holy Day Food Drive for the congregation — a longstanding Beth Am tradition. Please join us in supporting our High Holy Day Food Drive, sponsored by BATY (Beth Am Temple Youth). In honor of our 70th anniversary year, our goal is to collect 7,000 pounds of food! Please bring non-perishable food donations with you to Yom Kippur services. When you arrive, please look for BATY teens assisting with donation collection. Alternatively, you can order non-perishables on Amazon and have the food delivered to Beth Am. It is easy and we get the food very quickly. Learn more about what foods are most helpful on the JFCS Food Drive page.

Mitzvah #3: Donate to Farm Workers In Need

This holiday season we are once again collecting Safeway gift cards ($20 now due to the higher cost of food) before and during our harvest festival of Sukkot. For the past two years, our gift cards have enabled families to supplement their diets with much-needed protein food options. In 2023 and 2024, Beth Am members generously donated over 1,700 Safeway gift cards, making a huge difference for the community. Beth Am FarmMitzvah's goal is to collect 1,000 cards. A collection box will be available at Yom Kippur services and the Sukkot Erev Shabbat Service. A collection box is also available in the Beth Am Office. LEARN MORE

Mitzvah #4: Adopt Sustainable Habits This Fall

As summer winds down and we approach our High Holy Days and times of reflection and awe, we recall that our faith compels us to take care of and restore the land that provides for us and on which we live. Your Beth Am Dayenu Circle has some tips and ideas for easy personal actions you and your family can take to preserve and restore our planet. We hope you will consider doing one or more of the following, in accordance with Pirke Avot’s teaching: "It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it." Mitzvah #5: Make Your Voice Heard

Call your representatives to let them know what is important to you and that you are against the direct assault on the principles that underpin our democracy. Use the 5 Calls App to help you give feedback. The free app is available from the App store, or visit https://5calls.org.
