This Month's Topic: When Speech & Conflict Collide

From U.S. college campuses, to Congressional hearings and horrific headlines, we are seeing daily just how unclear the line is between free speech and conduct that ranges from discriminatory to blatantly antisemitic. In this session, we will look at how these contentious issues have unfolded at Stanford University and why 20th century court decisions are wreaking havoc on 21st century politics and culture. Together we will explore how a California education law impacts one specific category of colleges and universities, while exempting others. We will also discuss why the White House and Department of Education are utilizing a Federal Civil Rights law as the basis for investigating colleges and universities nationwide that fail to address antisemitism effectively.

The Philosophy Minyan is a monthly lunchtime series on Zoom. All are welcome to join in an interactive and thought-provoking exploration of topics at the intersection of philosophy, Jewish thought and contemporary issues. No advance reading is required and participants will receive online access to all the class materials following each session.

Be sure to check the Beth Am calendar for future class descriptions and any schedule changes, as well as to register for individual sessions.
