July/August President's Column by Deb Radin: Building Community by Doing
In new situations, I tend to observe first, diving in once I have the lay of the land. You would think that wouldn’t be necessary at Beth Am, a place that has been part of my life since I was 6 years old. But as I prepared for a new role in this community I grew up in, I gravitated to Beth Am’s history, for context and a grounding connection to the past — to better understand who we are today as I considered our future.

Looking for A Few Friendly Volunteer Greeters
Be the friendly first impression and helpful presence at our community events. We need volunteers to help with greeting and creating a positive experience so that every person who walks through our doors feels at home. We are looking for warm, enthusiastic, friendly people to help us. Sound like you? Sound like someone you know? Encourage them to sign up, too. A fun training will be provided. If you or someone you know might be interested, please contact greeterleads@betham.org.

Beth Am Shared Identity Project
Our Shared Identity Project has recently moved into its second phase having conducted from the first phase more than 250 one-on-one conversations with congregants representing a most broad set of demographics. From the many Jewish journeys shared with our trained listeners, we have gleaned major themes and insights from which we now want to expand and focus our "dialogue" with all congregants in this full outreach effort.

August Is Prospective Member Month at Beth Am!
The best way to welcome new members to our Beth Am community is to be invited by YOU! As a current Beth Am member, you are the best ambassador for prospective members to be welcomed into our congregation. We encourage you to bring a friend/neighbor/relative to experience our lovely outdoor summer Erev Shabbat services and begin to get to know us!

Don’t forget to renew your Annual Membership and confirm your contribution amount
Thank you to the many members who have renewed and confirmed your contributions for Annual Membership for the July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026 year! We are looking forward to a wonderful year together. If you have not had a chance yet, we request that each member household actively renew and confirm your membership contribution amount please, so we know how much to charge to your account. Confirmation of membership expectations reduces confusion or surprises later, and is critical to our planning for the year.

Caregivers Sh'ma Groups
Are you caring for a spouse? If you feel overwhelmed, you are not alone. You can take part in a Sh’ma group — not therapy, but a safe and friendly space to share stories. This group format has proved successful here at Beth Am in helping us start meaningful, supportive conversations. You will have guidelines for suggested topics and respectful interactions. You can easily form or join a group; the leadership duties are minimal and help from clergy is continually available. Groups are now forming. Join in! For more information, please contact Rabbi Watenmaker at rabbi_watenmaker@betham.org.

July/August Clergy Column by Rabbi Yoel Kahn: Healing the Space-Time Fabric
According to Albert Einstein, “space” and “time,” which, in the normal course of our lives, are distinct and irreconcilably different, are actually dimensions of the one fabric of creation. Under the influence of gravity, space and time flow alongside one another in a continuous, seamless relationship; together they make up “the space-time fabric.”

Outdoor Summer Services Continue!
We continue to celebrate Shabbat in our beautiful Outdoor Chapel all summer long. In July and August, we will welcome Beth Am members to share words of Torah during the service. A complete list of speakers will become available online.

Help Beth Am Thrive

July Fund in Focus: Youth Education, Camp, and Israel Scholarship Fund
It’s that time of year again, when Beth Am kids are enrolling in our programs for the coming school year. Beth Am’s Youth Education, Camp, and Israel Scholarship Fund helps make registration fees as affordable as possible for families who need financial assistance. We will never turn a prospective student away for financial reasons!

Member Spotlight & Builders Circle Profile: Barbara and Cliff Burwick
Over the years, Barbara and Cliff have expanded their circle of Beth Am friends, and have enjoyed sharing Shabbat dinners, holidays, celebrations, and life cycle events with these special people. As they raised their family, Beth Am played a central role as a place of connection with their Jewish faith and their Jewish community. Cliff has participated for many years in Torah Study and Talmud Study, both Barbara and Cliff enjoy the Jewish films, lectures and classes, special events, and seeing friends at Shabbat services. Says Barbara, “I love the beautiful setting, sitting in our windowed Sanctuary, looking outward and inward both!”

Justice

The July Tzedakah Box proceeds will support New Israel Fund (NIF), helping Israel live up to its founders’ vision of a society that ensures complete equality to all its inhabitants. NIF's aim is to advance liberal democracy, including freedom of speech and minority rights, and to fight the inequality, injustice and extremism that diminish Israel.

Injustice Doesn't Take a Summer Vacation
Reproductive rights and abortion access are Jewish values. One way to show our support for women who choose to or need to have an abortion procedure is to send them a Post-Abortion Care Kit via their medical provider. The kit includes comfort items, such as menstrual pads, tea bags, chocolate candy, and instant hot packs. The kits can also include handwritten notes showing our support for the patient and their healthcare provider.

Beth Am Recycling Update: We are doing better than you thought!
By Lisa Steinback, BAW Co-President in collaboration with Beth Am’s Dayenu Circle

Have you ever wondered why Beth Am does not do more recycling, composting, and separating out of trash? Did you think we need to do better? Members of our Dayenu Circle Sustainability team and other groups, including Beth Am Women, were asking about this, and we were concerned. It is a Jewish Value to respect the planet, and it may have appeared like we were not doing a great job. We decided it was worth looking into, and, thanks to some investigative work, we are happy to report that we are doing MUCH better than we thought.

Education

Beth Am Youth Education Registration Is Now OPEN for the 2025-2026 School Year!
We hope you will join us for another year of exciting Youth Education programming! Our programs build community and identity through deep and dynamic Jewish learning. We offer programs for learners of all ages and interests, including families with young children, emerging teen leaders, actors, singers, and more! We're so excited for another great year of programming at Beth Am. Join us!

This Year, Celebrate Chanukah in Uganda
Join Rabbi Nambi on a memorable trip to experience the beauty of her home country and celebrate Shabbat and Chanukah with the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda. The "Celebrate Chanukah in Uganda" trip offers an incredible journey through central, northern, and eastern Uganda. Participants will experience the country's unique and diverse landscapes, from exploring the rainforest and wildlife to the source of the River Nile and the mountains of Sipi Falls.

The Value of Jewish Sleepaway Camp
As the weather turns warmer, children all over the country are packing their duffel bags with sunscreen, tie-dyed t-shirts, and anticipation. It’s time for sleepaway camp! We are thrilled that over 60 of our own Beth Am students will attend intentionally Jewish overnight camps this summer, the vast majority of whom will spend time at our Reform Movement partner, URJ Camp Newman in Santa Rosa.
