12:00 PM - 1:30 PMZoom VideoconferenceIs A.I. the New Golem?
As we enter into the era of artificial intelligence (A.I.) with its transformative promise and potential perils for humankind, the Jewish concept known as the “golem” is morphing into new forms. In this session we will explore the origins of the golem legend and what it may tell us about the 21st century. We will also consider the Jewish concept of knowledge in the context of the philosophical field known as epistemology, and whether the knowledge being generated by A.I. fits that framework. From the Torah and Talmud to the present, the idea of a human creation that is intended to be a servant or protector, but gains strength over time and becomes dangerous, has captivated imaginations. Is there a golem hiding in your digital devices? The Jewish golem had the Hebrew word for truth (emet) affixed to its forehead—how might that be different now?
