Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Judith Kerr, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, directed by Caroline Link (Nowhere in Africa) views displacement and the approaching Holocaust primarily through the eyes of Anna Kemper, a nine-year-old child. Anna's family is forced to hastily flee Berlin in 1933 in order to protect her father, a noted theater critic and prominent denouncer of Hitler. The wealthy, assimilated family relocates first to the Swiss countryside and then to Paris, where young Anna neither speaks the language nor understands the customs. Meanwhile, her family faces monetary fears and xenophobia.
